LinkBack: Autolink to your latest post from every comment

By on Jul 25, 2011 111

It’s no secret that the most important thing to us here at Livefyre is listening to your feedback and actually doing something about it. Sometimes your feedback is super weird, like “Hey Livefyre, can you make it so that when Danny Brown comments on my blog, it shows up pink?” But most of the time, it’s really great.

…And to show you how much we appreciate that feedback, we’ve just released a new feature that many of you have been asking for called LinkBack. It’s like an auto-signature on every comment, but way more useful.

Welcoming Livefyre Comments Back to the Blog

Livefyre has a rich community of blogs and commenters, and one of our priorities is to help you discover and share that amazing content. If LinkBack is activated on a blog, you’ll notice a link under a user’s comment to the most recent Livefyre conversation that they’ve created. It’s a great way to discover new content and increase the awareness of each other’s blogs. And don’t forget the added SEO benefit! It’s also a great way for you to get your blogger friends to switch to Livefyre ;-)

So how can you activate LinkBack on your blog? Visit your Site Admin (accessible from the “Sites” tab in your user settings or on in the sidebar from your profile page). From there, navigate to Site Settings – Extras. You’ll see a checkbox to turn on LinkBack.

Site settings - LinkBack

Check out the conversation below to see LinkBack in action. Livefyre has been automagically turned on for all commenters, so if you comment on a site that has it turned on as well, voila! Your comment will include LinkBack.

We’re excited to have launched this feature, and as always we’re looking forward to your feedback. So, what do you think?

P.S. We fixed another feature many of you asked about… when you click a username from the comment stream, it now takes you directly to that user’s site instead of to their Livefyre profile.

I was considering setting up the commentLuv plugin on my blogs but after reading some posts I will be going the with the LiveFyre option

Does Google rank our site higher  the more comments we have? I ask this because moderating all the comments takes up a lot of time.

jennalanger 708 pts moderator

mark daynes Google likes it when the page is updated frequently with new information, and comments do just that. It's worth having the extra keywords in the page and the new content.

jennalanger  I've now installed this on my blog. Do people that comment on my blog get a backlink. I hope so as I like the idea that people that take the time to engage and comment my blog get the seo rewards that it can bring.

I have enabled LinkBack on my Livefyre profile, but as you can see Livefyre only ever links to the same page on my blog, not a new, or even old blog post, and having reviewed older comments, none are ever updated to reflect my latest entry. Can you please advise how to fix this? Many thanks!!

ergoorgo Hey there, when you publish a new post it should pull the latest conversation, this can happen sometimes when first installing.

ergoorgo 10 pts

jennalangerergoorgo Thanks for the reply Jenna. I do not have Livefyre installed in my blog, but have set up a profile linked to my blog and link back enabled. I have posted well over a dozen comments, many with linkbacks. All point to my about page. Despite my having published several posts over the period. This does not seem to accord with your suggestion above, so I am not sure what else to change.

ergoorgo The Latest conversation updates if you are using Livefyre on your blog, as we pull that article from your site based on Livefyre conversations. If you don't have Livefyre active, then the latest conversation will not update.

I like this, but I don't want to lose the ability to directly allow commenters do-follow linkbacks as well as direct links back to their own blogs.

Thomas Frank 52 pts

saramtevis I'm not quite sure why you're worried about this - LinkBack doesn't remove the initial link from your username. You get both :)

Why livefyre always get my oldest post ? It should take newest post I think.

My latest conversation: Abs Diet Recipes

Dhara Mistry 198 pts moderator

loseweight Hey Barbara, when you import your content into Livefyre, it's not necessarily done in chronological order, so whatever blog post or page was imported last, that will be showed as your latest conversation. Once you publish your next blog post, that issue should self-correct and display the proper post.

I still cant understand where i can make it linkback to my latest post... :\

Hi there,

I've installed LiveFyre on my blog and also signed up to your community. Unfortunately I was not able to activate the linkback on my blog. I'm using a wordpress platform...any ideas? Thanks!

jennalanger 708 pts moderator

Larissa Hi Larissa, to have your latest post show up under your comments you need to turn it on here: http://www.livefyre.com/profile/edit/sites/ The website you are commenting on has to have it turned on as well, as you'll see with my comment.

Larissa This has to do with the way we import content, which goes from newest to oldest. As soon as you publish a new post it will show your latest conversation.

(before) - LiveFyre is an amazing commenting system that people use for conversation.

2 days ago - I tell people they can link back to their website from their username

(now) - 5 new comments - all generic filler, all with keyword-laden usernames linking back to crap sites.

....What have I done.

My latest conversation: Study Album of the Week: Pretty Lights - "Making Up A Changing Mind"

scratch that - 8 new comments. The banhammer is in full swing tonight.

Thomas Frank Hey Thomas, when you see one of those comments go ahead and flag it as spam - as the moderator it will disappear instantly and it trains our spam system. We're devising a plan as we speak to battle these spammers!

I like this a lot ... A LOT ... but I don't want to lose the ability to directly allow commenters do-follow linkbacks as well as direct links back to their own blogs - not just wherever they might have last commented. Any plans to either integrate a comment luv function or do something similar?

Thomas Frank 52 pts

KatMoody You can set your username to link back to your website instead of your LiveFyre profile. Check out mine for proof. I suppose you could make your username to be your chosen keyword if you wanted, but I wouldn't. I'd rather use my name.

My latest conversation: Study Album of the Week: Pretty Lights - "Making Up A Changing Mind"

Thomas Frank Thanks for replying. I really like this setup, but I'm still very addicted to my Comment Luv. :-) I just love the ability to post to Twitter and/or Facebook --if I could have that and my CommentLuv I would be very very happy :-)

KatMoody 11 pts

Thomas Frank Though now I see that your profile (if set to your URL) pulls in your latest post ... I wonder if the SEO benefit is similar to CommentLuv as a result? I like the links back, and I like giving them to my commenters at my blog. I'm going to have to think about this some more!

MarketSecretsBlogger 9 pts

KatMoody Thomas Frank you all must not know about CommentLuvs new premium version which does all that and more?!

KatMoody 11 pts

MarketSecretsBloggerThomas Actually - I do know about it, which is why I was really unsure about why LiveFyre would be better. I've decided to stick with my beloved CommentLuv for now. It would honestly take a lot to take me away from it, because I adore it.

jennalanger 708 pts moderator

KatMoody LinkBack is actually showing a bloggers latest post if they have Livefyre on their site. For example, this comment will have a link back to the last post I wrote on my site, similar to comment luv.

My latest conversation: Recap from BlogHer11: Can't stop blogging now!

KatMoody 11 pts

jennalanger I like that. I'm just having trouble liking it more than the simplicity of my WP with CommentLuv built in. Should I decide to go with a commenting platform, though I've already saved all the information so that I can install this one - it was the most impressive of all the ones I have looked into (and tried ... did NOT like IntenseDebate). Thanks for your reply!

KatMoody 11 pts

jennalanger So I completed my profile, because I do like using this system and have visited a few sites with it in use. But tell me something, are the only ones who can get a link back to their blog those who are using LiveFyre on their blog? So if I don't have it installed on my site I can't have a link back in my comments here, to my actual blog. I might more seriously consider switching if/when that were ever addressed so that anyone who commented could link back to their blog instead of their LiveFyre profile. That's the biggest PRO about using COmmentLuv for me, and one reason I am looking forward to their premium features (with Keyword luv as well as other features). As I said before, though, of all the different choices this one is my absolute favorite for the community building advantages. :-)

jennalanger 708 pts moderator

KatMoody Yes, it shows your latest blog post if you have Livefyre installed on your site. For every user though, if they fill in their website their username will link to their website as well. Hope to have you switch soon! :)

jennalanger 708 pts moderator

MarketSecretsBlogger Livefyre is really great for building community - it let's people have human, social conversations and is great for seeing what your comments are blogging about, and where they are commenting when you look at their Livefyre profiles.

From on my own comment on this blog, it seem that the links that autolink chose is random. It was not based on my last conversation. Anybody else can confirm that?

malaysia When you first install Livefyre it imports comments from newest to oldest, so it hits your last blog post first. I'm sure now if you lave a comment it will show your latest since you have published new articles since then. Let us know if you have any other questions, thanks!
